Malvern police warn quad bikers

Quad bikes are not licenced and therefore using them on public roads is a violation of the law.

ACCORDING to the SAPS at Malvern, several residents have complained about quad bikes being driven on public roads saying despite being a nuisance in terms of the noise, this also attracts crime and criminal elements.

“In the past week Malvern SAPS responded to calls of complaint from residents late in the evening and on weekends about the raised noise level in the park area,” said Corporate Communications Officer W/O Radhika Marimuthu. “The convergence of quad bikers on these residential roads and park areas has increased criminal activity and noise levels in these areas,” she added.

Quad bikes are not licenced and therefore cannot be used on public roads as this is a violation of the law in terms of the Road Traffic Act. Violaters can be charged under the provisions of the Road Traffic Act and have their quad bikes confiscated. “Parents who allow minors to drive quad bikes on residential and public roads will be fined accordingly.

“Those who turn a blind eye to their children riding these quad bikes on public roads, should know that doing so can lead to fatalities,” W/O Marimuthu said. Residents of suburbs that encounter unlicenced quad-bikers in their area can contact their local police or their Metro Police office on 031 361 0000 and the Malvern SAPS can be contacted on 031 489 9619/20.
