UPDATE: ANC councillors’ murder case postponed

Ngcobo and Lutsheku are charged with the murder of Thuli Ndlovu, who was the chairman of Abahlali baseMjondolo, a shack-dwellers’ organisation.

A MURDER case against Ward 12 ANC councillor, Mduduzi Ngcobo, and PR councillor, Luvelile Lutsheku, was postponed to 25 January next year.

The two councillors’ case was moved to the Durban High Court after several appearances in the Pinetown Magistrate’s Court.

Ngcobo and Lutsheku are charged with the murder of Thuli Ndlovu, who was the chairman of Abahlali baseMjondolo, a shack-dwellers’ organisation. Ndlovu was shot seven times at her house in KwaNdengezi on September 29 last year.

Thembani Ngongoma, national spokesman of Abahlali baseMjondolo, said so far they are pleased with the law’s procedure.

“We are just happy that arrests were made and we hope justice will prevail. We understand that the Durban High Court has lots of cases that they deal with, which is why the case was postponed to next year, January.

“The fact that the case was moved to the high court shows that the police have done their investigation. We just hope that the witnesses will not vanish and the accused will respect the bail’s terms.”

Ngongoma said it would make them very happy if the accused could be sentenced.

“People in high positions should not abuse their positions. Ndlovu was killed because she fought for the underprivileged and because of her integrity,” said Ngongoma.

He added that they are very disturbed by the fact that they are still occupying their positions and have not been suspended after being charged.

Treasurer of the Henry Bona Zone, Nada Ngcobo, said they are behind the councillors and will keep supporting them. “We will wait patiently for the court’s ruling,” said Ngcobo.
