150 number plates discovered in Waterfall

The number plates have been handed in at Hillcrest SAPS and will be checked to see if they have been used in any crimes.

A WATERFALL resident discovered 150 number plates that had been dumped in a field in the area on Thursday.

Steven King of Waterfall Crime Watch said he received a call from a resident about the number plates, which were scattered in a field in Waterfall.

“We have investigated the origin and have since discovered that an employee from a well-known motor dealer in Pinetown was going to recycle the perspex but somehow had them removed from his residence without his knowledge.

“The danger of this is that these plates could end up in the wrong hands, and that could be disastrous.

“Motor dealerships and companies that manufacture number plates should have a strict policy in place for the handling of old number plates.

“Perhaps the old plates need to be written into a register and then handed to authorities to have them destroyed,” he said.

Steven added that the plates have been handed in at Hillcrest SAPS and will be checked to see if they have been used in any crimes.

Hillcrest SAPS communications officer, Cst Ndumiso Manqele, confirmed the incident. “There is an ongoing investigation and the number plates have been reserved in the station,” he said.
