Pinetown high schools celebrate 60 years

Celebrations have officially started for the Pinetown High School 60th anniversary.

FORMER staff and pupils of Pinetown Girls’ and Pinetown Boys’ High Schools are invited to the Pinetown High School 60th anniversary celebrations.

Pinetown High School was founded in 1955 as a co-educational, dual-medium school. In 1955 the school opened its doors to 120 pupils in Standard 6 (Grade 8) and Standard 7 (Grade 9) and a staff of four. The headmaster was Mr HE Wiese, who was the principal for 22 years.

In 1978, Pinetown High School was divided into two schools as the number of pupils increased: the boys were moved to a new school (PBHS) and girls remained at the original school.

The celebrations have officially started – pupils recently made a formation at PGHS and sang happy birthday.

The PGHS deputy principal, Paula Tedder, said there will be a number of celebration over the next few months.

“The big one will be on Saturday, 22 August and former pupils and staff are invite to celebrate this milestone,” said Tedder. She added that all profits made from this event will go towards building a new and safer entrance at Pinetown Girls’ High School.
