It’s ‘Swingtime’ with Platform Jazz

Book now to see Platform Jazz at the Westville Country Club on Tuesday 16 June at 7pm.

AFTER a sell-out season at the Rhumbelow Theatre in Umbilo, ‘Swingtime’ with Platform Jazz returns for a once -off performance at the Westville Old Boys’ Hall, Westville Country Club on Tuesday, 16 June at 7pm.

The classy show features the best of swing music from the 30s, 40s and 50s. For their new show there are two new band members in the guise of Jeff Judge on sax, and Kirsten Sayers on clarinet. Effervescent Shelley MacLean will be the featured vocalist again. The rest of the band is unchanged, led by Cathy ‘Hotlips’ Peacock on trumpet, ‘Dunc the Hunk’ Wooldridge on trombone, Andreas ‘Bullfiddle’ Kappen on double bass, the one and only Melvin Peters on piano, and ‘bashful’ Bruce Baker on drums.

The show features hits by Duke Ellington, Rosemary Clooney and Ella Fitzgerald, such as ‘Fever’, ‘Hey Mambo’, ‘Blue Moon’, ‘Embraceable You’ and ‘A Nightingale Sang in Berkley Square’. The band will pay tribute to great big bands of that time and will include ‘Sing Sing Sing’, ‘Caravan’, ‘How High the Moon’ and a tribute to Glenn Miller. Other fab swing tunes include ‘I’ve Got You Under My Skin’, ‘Fly Me to the Moon’ and Shelly’s smoky version of ‘Georgia on My Mind’.

If it’s class, sophistication and good old-fashioned nostalgia you are after, go along to spend time with Platform Jazz.

Tickets are R220 each and include a buffet dinner. Westville Country Club members and pensioners pay R200 for the show and buffet dinner.

There’s an option for watching the show only at R120 each, or R100 for members and pensioners.

Westville Country Club is situated at 1 Link Road in Westville. The venue opens 90 minutes before show for picnic dinner. Booking is essential. No alcohol or food may be brought on to the premises.
