Illegal immigrants arrested in Durban raids

A joint law enforcement raid saw a number of illegal immigrants detained in the province this week.

POLICE arrested  more than 200 suspects in Durban and Pietermaritzburg during operation Fiyela, a joint operation with SAPS, SANDF, Home Affairs officials and Metro police.

Major Thulani Zwane, provincial police spokesman said, the aim of the operation is to target those places that are suspected to be hiding criminals and to seize all the dangerous weapons that are in the hands of the criminals as well as wanted suspects.

The operation started on Tuesday, 5 May and lasted until the early hours of Wednesday. Among the arrested suspects, seven were arrested for being in possession of dagga, assault and resisting arrest.

“During the operation, dagga, liquor, four cellphones, two overhead projectors, laptops and a TV set were recovered in Pietermaritzburg and Durban,” Zwane said. The total value of the recovered liquor is R10 000.

Most of the suspects were arrested for being in the country without the necessary documentation, Zwane added, and would be charged in terms of the Immigration Act.

The KZN provincial commissioner, Lieutenant General Mmamonnye Ngobeni applauded the members for the arrests of the suspects. “These operation will continue throughout the province. The use of multi-disciplinary teams is complementing to our operations and the criminals will feel the heat,” she said.
