Police nab two for attempted hijacking

The men pointed a pistol at a child minder and child outside the Maytime SPAR in Kloof on 18 March.

TWO men were arrested for an attempted hijacking outside Maytime SPAR in Kloof  thanks to a collaborative effort between Kloof SAPS and a security company.

According to Sheldin Dauberman, senior external investigator at Enforce Security Services, a woman was hijacked when she stopped at the shopping centre on 18 March. She went inside the outlet to do some shopping and left her child minder and child in the car.

“The child minder said the driver’s door swung open and a man pointed a pistol to her head while the child was on her lap. Two men entered the vehicle, one in the back of the car, and the other held a pistol to the child minder’s head.

While the hijackers searched the vehicle, the child minder realised they were distracted and took the opportunity to flee with the child.

With courage and bravery the child minder grabbed the child and jumped up while crying out for help. Sashi Chetty, the manager of Maytime SPAR, was the first to react, with total disregard to his own safety.

The men fled the scene in a white Toyota Condor with two distinctive identifications. It had white mag wheels and a yellow reflective strip running the length of the vehicle.

Security  investigators assisted Kloof SAPS and shared  information obtained via statements and CCTV footage.

“Following extensive leads from various sources, Enforce had a break-through as to the whereabouts of these men. During the early hours of Friday, 24 April, in conjunction with Pinetown SAPS and our detective branch, we proceeded to the known addresses of these suspects.

“We recovered the vehicle and the first man at the first address. We then proceeded to the second address and arrested a second guy. Both men were charged and detained for attempted hijacking,” said Dauberman.
