Amy jets off to discover Switzerland

Grade 11 pupil, Amy Amstutz has been chosen as the SPAR Star of the Month for Waterfall College.

WATERFALL College has chosen Amy Amstutz as its SPAR Star of the Month. The Grade 11 pupil was offered a unique opportunity by the Organisation of the Swiss Abroad (OSA) to travel to Switzerland for two weeks.

Mirjana Glauser from OSA said, the organisation enables young Swiss expatriates to get to know their homeland. For two weeks, ‘Discover Switzerland’ is a programme to get a closer look at all the diversity of Switzerland. Participants go on planned individual excursions to various cultural, historic and tourist destinations within the country. They are required to post about their experiences on a blog travel journal. The excursions and training opportunities help them to make friends and strengthen their ties with Switzerland.

Apart from exposing Amy to her Swiss heritage, the programme is also designed to encourage and nurture independence. She will be travelling by herself for the first time to and from Switzerland and also within the country on the various excursions.

Head of History at Waterfall College, Ms Linda Filmer believes that this experience will be invaluable for Amy. She says, “Amy is a mature, dedicated student. She shows great interest in History, other cultures, and world events in general. She is a worthy recipient of this opportunity and I look forward to hearing about her experience.”

Besides making an impact through this once in a lifetime opportunity to experience Switzerland, Amy is a dedicated member of the Waterfall College Majorettes Squad. Amy has competed in three Natal Finals Competitions and last year she was awarded the WFC Majorettes’ Leadership Trophy. Her position in the team for 2015 is the Head Sub Leader, where she is able to use her leadership skills and knowledge to improve her sub leader group.”Amy also actively participates in the school’s Drama Club and is currently auditioning for a role in a Shakespeare production at The Playhouse in Durban.
