‘Passion’ play covers Christ’s final period of his life

The 'Passion' play strives to restore the true meaning of Easter.

DURBAN Catholic Players’ Guild will present the 14th Durban ‘Passion’ play at the Playhouse Drama Theatre from 1 to 19 April.

The ‘Passion’ play strives to restore the true meaning of Easter. It is an epic scale dramatic production depicting Jesus’ passion, covering the final period of his life, from his visit to Jerusalem to his execution by crucifixion. It is performed by a large cast who volunteer their time and skills as part of their Lenten preparations. The play involves seven months of commitment from a 150-plus cast, with no remuneration, and is directed by Dawn Haynes and Tanya Conradie.

The cast comprises an inter-denominational group of diverse people, who vary in age from toddlers and teenagers, to young adults, to the more mature.

Pinetown resident, Mark Hunt, has been cast as Herod in the play. This is his first ‘Passion’ play, but said he feels great and enjoys the opportunity to use his talents.

A graphic designer by day and an entertainer at night, Mark said he is also part of a singing duo – Unpluck’d – and sang second tenor with the Durban Men’s Choir between ‘Passion’ plays. He is also an avid amateur performer at various open mic evenings and a music director for the KZN Walk to Emmaus Community.

His personal goal is to touch a heart using his talents as a performer. Mark is appealing to the community to support the Durban ‘Passion’ play.

There will be 24 performances in the Playhouse Drama Theatre, running from 1 to 19 April. One of the highlights is a special performance for the hearing impaired on Sunday, 12 April at 2.30pm, where the performance will be signed.

Block bookings are available for anyone who would like to book the whole theatre for fund raising. Contact Dawn Haynes at dmhaynes@webmail.co.za. Public booking is through Computicket.
