A security guard shot three robbers, killing two of them, when the men tried to rob him on Friday.

AN off duty security guard shot three men, killing two of them, when they tried to rob him in Hammarsdale on Friday, 27 March.

KZN Provincial SAPS said on 27 March at 4.30pm two men were shot dead and one was critically wounded when they were shot and killed by a man who alleged that they attempted to rob him.

“It is alleged that the 33-year-old man was walking to work in Ballim Road, Hammarsdale when he was approached by the three  men, armed with firearms, who attempted to rob him.

“The victim, who works as a security guard, defended himself and shot at the men, instantly killing two unidentified men and wounding the third. Two firearms, suspected to belong to the robbers, were recovered at the scene.

“Hammarsdale police have opened an inquest docket for further investigation. The recovered firearms will be sent for ballistic tests to ascertain if they were used in the commission of any other crime in the country,” said Colonel Jay Naicker.

The KwaZulu-Natal provincial commissioner, Lieutenant General Mmamonnye Ngobeni, appealed to the community to remain vigilant when traveling to and from work, either early or late at night.

“We have opened an inquest docket and no stone will be left unturned to uncover what transpired,” she said.
