SAPS partnered with the Open Door Crisis Care to raise human trafficking awareness

SAPS and the Open Door Crisis Centre are bringing awareness to Human Trafficking.

On Saturday, 21 March KZN SAPS members, together with members from the Open Door Crisis Care Centre in Pinetown, gathered at Moses Mabhida Stadium to walk 15km along the Durban beachfront to raise awareness on human trafficking.

The SAPS wants to raise awareness, and inform the community of their rights and how they can get help.

“Human trafficking is fast becoming a threat to the existence of our citizens, and detriments the basic human rights that we have as a society. The victims of these crimes are being traded for monetary gain as well as personal gain. They are used as drug mules, for prostitution, child labour, muti killings and various other criminal activities,” said Major Thulani Zwane, media spokesman for the SAPS.

Provincial Commissioner Lieutenant General, Mmamonnye Ngobeni, said, “Recently there has been a lot of media interest around children that were reported missing and in some instances found dead. We need to make the members of the public aware that the SAPS is doing everything in its power to ensure the safety of all citizens, and that when a person goes missing, they must report it immediately instead of waiting 24 or 48 hours, because there is no waiting period to report a missing person. This can help extensively in achieving the mandate to protect our community from such vicious crimes that diminish our human dignity.”
