Midmar swimmers support Miles4Marrow campaign

Anyone swimming the Midmar Mile can join the Miles4Marrow campaign by contacting Allison Naidoo at The Sunflower Fund.

SWIMMERS from across Durban are rallying in support of The Sunflower Fund as they dedicate their swim to a worthy cause, at the world’s largest open water swimming race and one of SA’s most prestigious aquatic events, the Midmar Mile, which takes place from 7 to 9 February.

Allison Naidoo, PR support for The Sunflower Fund KZN, said the The Sunflower Fund’s Miles4Marrow campaign has proven to be a highly effective fundraising and awareness tool, as the athletes enjoy doing what they love for a good cause and people enjoy supporting those they admire for doing something so physically challenging.

“Sportsmen and women also seem to be more empathetic to the plight of those with terminal illnesses as they appreciate the fact that they can enjoy outdoor sport. Leukaemia patients often spend weeks and months in isolation wards, and sport is not an option for them,” said Naidoo.

Participating swimmers are responsible for asking their personal and work contacts to sponsor them per mile, and no amount is too small. All funds raised will go towards building the South African Bone Marrow Registry (SABMR) to give hope to patients diagnosed with life-threatening blood disorders who are searching for their one in 100 000 donor match. Anyone swimming the Midmar Mile can join the Miles4Marrow campaign by contacting Allison Naidoo on 031 266 1148 or allison@sunflowerfund.org.za.
