Local inspector rescues puppy from drain

A 12-week-old puppy was saved after falling a drainpipe in Caversham Glen.

A LOCAL Kloof and Highway SPCA inspector spent almost two hours trying to rescue a Rottweiler puppy from a drain.

Kloof and Highway SPCA wrote on its Facebook page that on Saturday, 17 January at 1.30pm, Inspector Petros Simamane from the SPCA received a call from Lungile Cele, requesting assistance in rescuing her Rottweiler puppy, Mfana, who fell into a drain at the bottom of a gutter pipe outlet in her garden.

Inspector Simamane rushed to the house in James Herbert Road, Caversham Glen. After Cele showed him where the hole was, he called to the pup and could hear it crying.

“He tried to use his cell phone light as a guide to determine how deep the puppy was trapped. It was clear that the only way to save the puppy would be to dig around the drain pipe.”

For about an hour and a half Inspector Simamane used a shovel in the searing heat to dig around the drain pipe. He was just about to call in assistance from Rescue Tech when the head of the 12-week-old pup appeared. It appeared to be unharmed.

The parents of the pup, Nyamazane and Lucy (both Rottweilers), as well as Cele were glad to see their puppy was safe.

The Kloof and Highway SPCA urged pet owners to ensure that all holes and drains on their properties are properly covered. The SPCA inspectorate rescues numerous animals annually from drains, holes and uncovered pipes.

The society also urged residents to ensure that pools are covered when they have small breed dogs or puppies.
