Explore Christianity with Alpha Course

Alpha Course starts today: the St Agnes Anglican Church in Kloof invites residents to explore the meaning of life from a Christian point of view.

Whether you are looking for good company and new friendships, a spiritual awakening or to explore the Christian faith, then St Agnes Anglican Church’s Alpha Course is for you.

The course seeks to explain what Christianity is about, without trying to force the faith onto anyone. It’s a 12-week-long course, with meetings once a week. Those attending will watch a DVD and enjoy some refreshments and a meal at every session. This non-denominational Christian-based course, hosted by Nicky Gumble, is an opportunity to explore life and the Christian faith in a friendly, open and informal environment, as well as an opportunity for people to share and discuss their thoughts. It is also an opportunity to meet people and make friends in a safe environment.

On Wednesday, 21 January at 6.30pm there will be an introductory evening to the course at the church in Kloof, and those who attend have no obligation to return.

Mike Browne, who lost his wife of 37 years to cancer a couple of years ago, said he joined the Alpha Course in 2008 because he promised his late wife he would do it.

“I promised my wife I would do the Alpha Course, and started as a very angry person. I felt life had done me a dirty after I lost my late wife. But I found the most amazing people and my future wife, Gaynor, at my first course. I’ve gained so much from being a part of this course and I’ve seen so many people grow,” Mike said.

His wife, Gaynor, said the course showed her that she could be forgiven for her wrongs: “I went to the Alpha Course in 2012 because I have been Anglican all my life and I wanted to try it. When I got divorced I felt I would never be forgiven for it. But the course showed me I could be forgiven, and it gave me a wonderful feeling that God could forgive me, even though I messed up.”

Dave Romeril, who has been a part of the course for almost 15 years, said he and his late wife joined in 2000 when they decided to attend the introductory evening.

“Since then I’ve just kept coming back. To see some people make a 180 degree turn is hugely fulfilling. We are not here to convert people to Christianity, but to explore the meaning of life from a Christian point of view,” he said.

The church also runs a morning Alpha Course, which also starts on Wednesday, 21 January at 9am. There’s no meal at the morning course, but refreshments and snacks are served afterwards.
