Matric exam hearings kick off in Durban

Hearings into mass copying and other irregularities during the 2014 matric exams gets off to a start in Durban today.

THE Department of Education will begin its hearings into mass cheating during the 2014 matric exams at the Durban Teacher’s Centre in Overport today.

According to the department’s spokesman, Elijah Mhlanga, the hearings will start with chief invigilators and invigilators followed by the affected pupils who will be required to give their side of the story before the department’s committee.

He said Umalusi would monitor the process and teacher unions would be in attendance to observer the hearings.

In a statement released at the weekend, Mhlanga said more than 5000 from all provinces were being investigated for a variety of irregularities, including mass copying.

He said the department wanted the matter around cheating resolved speedily to allow pupils who are cleared to get on with their lives and to sanction those guilty of wrongdoing.
