Durban drug accused granted million rand bail

Greg Ayres, who stands accused of being in possession of drugs, was granted bail in a Mpumalanga court late last week.

CAROLINA Magistrates Court granted Gregory Ayres (45) bail last week.

Greg Ayres , who is facing drug dealing charges after police arrested him and co-accused, Valari Nikolov (41) at the Middleburg Toll Plaza in November, has been granted bail of R1 million.

Ayres is joint owner of Keys on Florida Road and Keys on Davenport Road. Ayres and Nikolov were arrested on Tuesday, 4 November for being in possession of ecstasy tablets.

Just days later, police raided a Westville home in Konigkramer Avenue and arrested the homeowner, Gareth Brissett (40) and two other men, John Maphumulo (32) and Sakhile Dlamini (28) for possession of precursor chemicals used to manufacture drugs.

On 10 November follow-up investigations were conducted and the SAPS team uncovered a micro warehouse being used for what appears to be a clandestine drug laboratory with multiple machines, drums of precursor chemicals, drugs and an undisclosed amount of cash.

According to police spokesman, Lieutenant General Solomon Makgale, Ayres was granted bail in the Carolina Magistrate’s Court, just outside Middelburg, on Thursday, 11 December. Nikolov is still to apply for bail.
