One dead, six injured in N3 crash

Three emergency workers were injured when a truck crashed into an accident scene.

FOUR people were injured  when a truck crashed into an accident scene in which two people were injured and one person was killed  on the N3 near Mariannhill Toll Plaza (Durban bound) earlier this morning.

According to Russel Meiring, coordinator for Crisis Communications at ER24, three emergency workers were injured when a large truck crashed into multiple emergency vehicles attending to a previous incident on the N3 near Marianhill.

“ER24 paramedics, as well as other services, arrived on scene and found that two large trucks had collided in the middle of the highway. On assessment, paramedics discovered that a man in his 20s was killed while two others suffered minor to moderate injuries,” said Meiring.

While paramedics and rescue workers were tending to the injured, a third truck apparently lost control and crashed into some of the emergency vehicles, pushing them through the crash site.

“Three rescue personnel suffered minor to moderate injuries. Additional ambulances were called in to assist at the scene while Metro services closed two lanes of the highway to provide further safety. Paramedics provided the injured with advanced life support and then transported them to nearby hospitals,” added Meiring.

The cause of both incidents is not yet known but local authorities were at the scene and will investigate.

Emergency services are trying to clear the accident scene on the N3.
