Water shortage frustrates residents

Highway area residents experience water cut off for days without any notice.

HIGHWAY residents have had their water supply cut for days with notice or explanation.

Botha’s Hill, some areas in Mariannhill and KwaDabeka have been affected.

KwaDabeka residents has lived without water for almost a week and on Monday the water was still not restored.

This is not the first time residents from Botha’s Hill experienced water problems as they have lived without water for days, earlier this year.

Botha’s Hill resident, Jean Burfoot nee O’Donovan said, this is the second time in the last few weeks.

“When l queried this the first time l was told the reservoir is empty because someone opened the wrong valve and lost all the water.

“We accepted the explanation and waited days before we had water again. This time l called the water department and was told the same problem, the reservoir is low and also we have a burst water pipe, for three days?”

Who is in charge if a water pipe bursts and why does it take three days? Operations should be monitoring the situation and making plans to obtain water from another reservoir. l know we have had no rain for months then why is it that the whole of Durban is not without water.”

KwaDabeka resident, Lungi Zondi also shared her frustration about the water cuts.

“We have not had water from Wednesday morning. I have phoned three times requesting for a water tank as the water was cut without anybody informing the community.

“On Monday, they still did not send any water tank to the area.

“l can not explain what it is like to not be able to have a daily shower when temperatures are above 25 degrees, we cannot flush our toilets, we can not do our washing, animals need water too and so do our plants.”

Numerous attempts to get comment from the eThekwini Water and Sanitation Department was unsuccessful.
