Students protest at Westville campus

UKZN students protest over fees increase.

Students at the UKZN Westville campus are reported to have embarked on a new round of protests on Wednesday afternoon.

The reason for the protests is alleged to be a financial dispute, with some students complaining that the registration fee had been increased from R6000 to R9000.

“We were also we were told to pay the fees on a certain date and now that date has been brought forward,” one student said.

Police were reportedly called to the scene, though one eyewitness reported that a private security company dispersed the crowd of protesting students by firing rubber bullets.

Classes were put on hold at around 12 noon when students started protesting.

A staff member at the campus said the situation is calm today but there are rumours that the students will start the protest again tomorrow.

“The situation was very bad yesterday as we had difficulty leaving the offices,” she said.
