May could strike plea bargain

Truck driver, Sanele May, will appear at the Durban High Court on Wednesday 17 September.

A PLEA deal is on the cards for truck driver Sanele May, who is charged with 24 counts of culpable homicide after the horror crash on Field’s Hill last year.

He appeared at the Durban High Court for the first time on Tuesday morning. It was reported that his attorney, Professor Mdletshe, was willing to negotiate a plea bargain with the State.

The 18-wheeler May was driving ploughed into five vehicles at the Field’s Hill Old Main Road offramp in September last year, killing 24 people. He was later charged with culpable homicide as well as reckless and negligent driving. The owner of the trucking company, Gregory

Govender, claimed that May applied for his position at Sagekal Logistics with fraudulent papers. According to Govender, the South African traffic register certificate was fraudulent as well as his public driving permit.

The case was adjourned until Wednesday 17 September.
