Pinetown protest looks set to continue

Taxi drivers and operators are gathering for another round of protest in Pinetown.

Pinetown residents and commuters may have to prepare themselves for another round of violent protest from disgruntled taxi drivers and operators today following yesterday’s events.

This morning protesting taxi drivers have reportedly blocked taxis from entering or leaving the Pinetown taxi rank (Anderson Road/Old Main Road intersection).

Taxi commuters are advised to find alternate means of transport in the affected areas.

On Wednesday taxi drivers faced off against police at a  after a roadblock spiralled out of control.

Gunfire was exchanged and police used tear gas to control the situation.

Two people were allegedly shot in the ensuing gunfire exchange . One of the injured was reported dead, but this has yet to be confirmed. In total, twelve people were reported injured at the incident.

This morning protestors began gathering at the same spot, under the watchful gaze of a heavy police presence.

The situation is still tense, but there have been no reports of violence so far.
