Motorist warns highway drivers

A highway motorist is concerned after a recent dangerous encounter on the road.

MOTORISTS are urged to lookout for a group of people driving on the wrong side of the road on the notorious Field’s Hill.

According to a Cowies Hill resident, Gavin Heron, he was driving his Landrover down Field’s Hill on Saturday 19 July around 11.30pm, when he saw bright lights approaching him.

Gavin was on the fast lane and had no choice but to swerve his car into the slow lane to avoid a collision.

“I could not make out the car model, or how many people were in the vehicle as they were driving with bright lights. The vehicle did not stop. It just speeded up Field’s Hill on on-coming traffic,” said Gavin.

Subsequent to this incident, the Heron family were told of other incidents involving teenagers being dared to drive on the opposite sides of the road on Field’s Hill as part of an initiation.

“But how far this is true, I can not comment,” said Gavin.

Lt Bongumuso Manqele, communications officer at Pinetown SAPS, said there were no reports of this incident, however they will be keeping a close eye on the information received.

“It’s against the law to drive towards oncoming traffic, not to mention it can cause fatal injuries. Motorists are urged to report these incidents immediately to the police so we can locate these culprits,” said Manqele.
