Ethan flexes brains and brawns

Ethan Matkovich has been selected as Westville Senior Primary School's July Spar Star of the Month.

ETHAN Matkovich, a Westville Senior Primary School (WSPS) pupil is not only an excellent academic pupil, but also an all round athlete.
The talented Grade 6 pupil plays for WSPS’s U13 rugby, cricket and hockey teams. He has been selected to be the vice captain for the school’s hockey team.

The 12-year-old has also been selected as the captain of the KwaZulu-Natal U13 A hockey team. “It is a great honour to be selected as the captain of a team where most of the other team members are older than me. The coach made the selection after my fellow team mates and myself were asked to choose who we wanted as team captain,” he said.

In July, Ethan and his team mates competed in the Inter-provincial Hockey Tournament in Bloemfontein, where they earned third place in the A section. Approximately 16 teams across South Africa competed in the tournament. Eight teams competed in the A section and the B section, respectively.

“I am proud of my teams, and I always try to do my best. I practice almost every night at home, and I also try and practice as much as possible after school. It is hard work, and it can get tricky to balance my school work and sports, but I manage,” said the humble pupil.
