Kyla also competed in the Nandos Invitational Junior event last weekend, where she won three apparatus medals (gold on floor exercise, gold on balance beam, silver on uneven bars and a trophy for third place in the overall competition.

“Gymnastics is fun. I really enjoy it. I don’t participate to win, I just have fun and like showing of my abilities,” said Kyla.

Her goal is to compete in the Olympics one day. She said she is inspired by her coach, Louise Bamber from the Pinetown Gymnastic Club.

While Kyla can do all types of apparatus which is floor, bars, beams and vaulting, she thoroughly enjoys floor, which is tumbling to a dance routine. She said her motivation is pushing her body to the extremes and seeing just what she is capable of.

“I want to thank my coach for her efforts in encouraging me to push myself further and my family and friends who have supported me along the way,” said Kyla.

Kovin Moodley, sports coordinator at Sarnia Primary School said the amount of dedication that Kyla puts into a sport that is not done at school is something to admire in athletics. Her achievements in gymnastics has incited the school to name her SPAR Star of the Month.
