Knives out for Highway criminals

Blue Security urges residents to keep security gates locked at all times and to be vigilant when arriving and leaving home.

A WINSTON Park couple was lucky to escape with their lives after a gang of armed men attacked and robbed them recently.

According to Blue Security’s managing director, Henk Van Bemmelen, it was only one of several brazen daylight home invasions in the Highway area during the past two weeks.

“The resident was busy loading his bicycle onto his car when three men, armed with knives, held him up and assaulted him,” said Van Bemmelen.

The group of men are believed to have gained access into the residential complex by cutting through the electric fence at one end of the property.

“They then tied both him and his wife up before they stole a firearm from the safe as well as cash and jewellery,” he said. “Fortunately, the couple was not seriously injured.”

The Pinetown SAPS attended the scene.

Van Bemmelen said in another early morning home invasion, domestic workers and a resident were also lucky to escape with their lives.

“Armed men held up a gardener in Cowies Hill and attempted to break into the house but the gang fled when the domestic worker, and the home owner’s son, screamed. They jumped over the wall and fled onto the freeway,” said Van Bemmelen.

The SAPS attended the scene to search for the suspects, but they were not caught.

In a third incident in Gillits in Edward Drive, a resident was about to leave her property when a lone man forced her back inside and threatened to shoot her although he did not appear to have a firearm.

“He forced her to hand over her jewellery, cash, cellphone and laptop before he fled. The resident had minor injuries and was taken to hospital,” said Van Bemmelen.

Two men armed with knives, also invaded a home in St Helier Road in Gillitts.

“They entered the house through an unlocked back door and held up the resident and a domestic worker. They fled with laptops, jewellery and a cellphone. Fortunately, there were no injuries,” said Van Bemmelen.
