Trio conquers Comrades on behalf of the SPCA

The ladies did it!

Lindi Liebenberg, Bernadette Stokes and Leanne Pollock have managed to raise close on R11000 for the Kloof & Highway SPCA, as well as a few blankets, toys and dog treats, after completing the Comrades Marathon.

The daring trio from Forest Hills Athletic Club set out to raise funds for the Kloof & Highway SPCA through the DoIt4Charity website.

This was the first Comrades Marathon for Lindi and Bernadette and Leanne’s third.

Considering it was their first attempt at this challenging race, Lindi and Bernadette were thrilled with how they coped on the race. Apart from some nausea at 30kms for Bernadette they felt strong throughout the race.

“I had a really good first experience, I didn’t feel nauseous and you soon forget all the pain you went through and I can’t wait to do it again next year,” said Lindi.

Bernadette added, “You just keep telling yourself you are going to make it and you never give up. I just had to finish, not finishing was never an option.”

They all started the race together, but split up just before Cato Rige. Bernadette fell behind but Lindi caught up to Leanne at Inchanga where they ran together until Westville, when Leanne went ahead. Bernadette managed to catch up to Lindi and they ran together to the end.

“As hard as it was leaving each other behind in a race like this you just have to do it for yourself but finishing together with Bernadette was just awesome,” said Lindi.

“The best parts were undoubtedly the start, which is very emotional, and running on ‘home territory’ (Hillcrest, Gillitts, Kloof). It is fantastic to see so many people you know cheering for you! It definitely lifts the spirits. The worst part was Inchanga and Drummond – it was very hot and dry and those hills are never-ending!!” said Leanne.

They all finished the race with Leanne achieving a time of 11hrs08min and Bernadette and Lindi finishing together in a time of 11hrs23min.

“It was a very tough race and so hot along the route. I didn’t do the time I wanted but given the conditions, I was pleased I finished,” said Leanne.

The ladies would like to thank all those who stood beside them and who donated to the cause.

“We were so overwhelmed by the generosity from everyone!”
