Malvern man arrested for drug dealing

The man arrested is allegedly link to the R41-million drug bust in November 2013.

A 33-YEAR-OLD man appeared at the Pinetown Magistrate’s Court yesterday on charges of drug dealing.

The man, who was arrested in Malvern on Friday 23 May, by officers from the Provincial Directorate For Priority Crime Investigation (DPCI), is linked to the Hillcrest drug saga where drugs worth R41 million were found in a Hillcrest home.

On 30 November 2013, the National Crime Intelligence Unit together with the Hawks in KwaZulu-Natal pounced on the house and discovered a drug den. When the members went through the room they found heroin powder in one room under ultra violet lighting being dried up.

In the same room there were cupboards filled with black bags which were loaded with straws of heroin which were ready to be shipped out.

In another room on the floor there were sports bags and buckets filled to the brim with heroin. In the lounge there were three tables where the cutting and packing was in progress and where all the heroin was laid out on the tables.

Police officers also recovered eight sports bags filled with mandrax tablets. In total 1000070 of heroin straws were recovered with the street value of R21.4 million, 79000 mandrax tablets valued at R4.1 million and 50kgs of heroin powder valued at R15 million, bringing the total value of the recovered drugs to R41 million.

The accused was granted bail and the remand date is unknown at this stage.
