Hillcrest pupils cook with Jamie Oliver

The lesson was to encourage pupils to think more carefully about making healthy eating choices.

HILLCREST High School pupils participated in Jamie Oliver’s TES (Teach, Educate, Share) cooking lesson which was broadcast live around the world on his Food Revolution Day on 16 May.

The Food Revolution network was set up by Oliver in 2010 and links voluntary ambassadors in more than 85 countries who work to make healthy food accessible to all.

The day began in Australia where thousands of children participated in a 30-minute lesson on how to prepare a Rainbow Salad Wrap by the world-renowned chef. At 2pm British Standard Time, the lesson was streamed live from City Hall in London to the rest of the world where 10 000 schools took part in this event globally. A world record was broken by the number of schools that took part.

Hillcrest High’s Grade 9 pupils had their ingredients ready when the show went live on YouTube. They grated, chopped, mixed and wrapped as Oliver talked them through the process.

The end result was a delicious wrap filled with a healthy filling that the pupils agreed they would happily prepare for themselves again.

Consumer studies teacher at the school, Deirdre Kroone, was delighted that the pupils had taken part in this live lesson and said that the opportunity was certain to encourage them to think more carefully about making healthy eating choices in the future.
