Does anyone have information about the 4th Dragoon Guards regiment?

Could soldiers have been transported between the two provinces rather than overland?

EDITOR – I’m trying to trace the possibility of my grandfather Sergeant W Loveridge, regiment the 4th Dragoon Guards, regimental number 4900, being in Durban/Pietermaritzburg in 1907.

He was a cartographer and I understand reconstruction work was being carried out prior to Union. The 4th Dragoon Guards were in SA between 1904 and 1908 and my grandfather married in the

Regimental Church Wynberg on 22 April 1908. The Durham Castle left Durban with a Sergeant W Loveridge aboard bound for Southampton via Cape Town. The wording is Port of Departure Durban,South Africa. Arrival date 23rd July 1907. Port of Arrival Southampton. I’ve tried to clarify the date but need to know did the Durham Castle arrive and depart on the same day or does it refer to arrival in Southhampton?

Is it possible that a soldier could have been transported between the two provinces rather than overland? I’m hoping someone can help with my search.
