Police armed with new technology

A Microdotting pilot project is set to be implemented in the Upper Highway area as a crime prevention initiative.

THE SAPS Crime Prevention, in partnership with the SA Can and Recoveri Microdot, will be initiating a pilot project for the introduction of the revolutionary microdot technology in the Upper Highway area.

On Wednesday 11 December SAPS, SA Can and Recoveri Microdot met with residents and Crime prevention groups of Kloof, Gillitts, Hillcrest Park and Winston Park to discuss the pilot project.

According to Brian Jones, the founder of SA Can, the new technology turns any object into “DNA traceable evidence.”

The microdot technology works by contaminating the object with thousands of microdots, which are digitally encoded with information of the object’s owner. The digital data of the microdots will be stored on a database, which can only be accessed by the SAPS and police assisting organisations, such as SA Can. A simple scan reveals the owner’s data.

“As objects are contaminated with thousands of dots the technology is virtually impossible to remove. It is also invisible to the naked eye,” said Jones.

The residents in the four areas can register for the technology through SA Can at R144. This will enable the household to contaminate all of the electronic goods in their homes.

“This technology will facilitate the process of reuniting stolen goods with the owners. Our biggest challenge is that we recover stolen goods all the time, but because people don’t report robberies we have no way of tracing the owners. With this technology we can link the property to the owners, and can even encourage them to press charges when we have a suspect in custody,” said Jones.

The project also has a proactive aspect. Registered households will be fitted with a marked sign warning criminals that the items are microdotted.

“We believe that the technology and the pilot project will change the way we fight crime. It is a holistic crime prevention initiative,” said Jones.

Since September last year the micro dotting technology has been successfully mandated into law, and all new vehicles were required to be contaminated with the technology.
