Mandela portrait to inspire pupils

Ex-pupil at Sarnia Primary School, Matthew Willman, donated a limited edition portrait of the late Nelson Mandela at the school's prize giving last Tuesday.

DAYS before the death of South Africa’s former statesman, Nelson Mandela, Sarnia Primary School was honoured with a donation of one of Madiba’s limited edition portraits.

Matthew Willman, an ex-Sarnia Primary School pupil and official photographer for the Nelson Mandela Foundation, was the guest of honour at the school’s prize giving.

In his speech to the pupils he afforded them the knowledge of having a dream, believing in yourself to such an extent that you eventually achieve that dream.

It took him 11 years for his dream to become a reality and he is currently living that dream. “If there is something you want, go for it,” said Matthew.

According to Peter O’Neill, the principal of Sarnia Primary School, the intimate photo of the late former president is a beautiful gift.

“Putting this picture up in our foyer will remind us of someone we all need to be more like, someone we should aspire to because of his compassion, kindness and forgiveness. It will be a daily reminder of an amazing man and a reminder of the qualities that we continuously need to develop,” said Peter. He extended his condolences to Mandela’s friends and family.
