Roaming dogs responsible for death of duikers

Owners are warned to prevent their dogs roaming in the reserves or face the consequences.

Hillcrest Residents are urged and have been repeatedly warned to secure their dogs in their properties after dogs were responsible for the death of three duikers, including a pregnant female in the Springside Nature Reserve in the past few weeks.

“This situation is presently under severe threat as some resident’s dogs are roaming into sections of the Springside Reserve and the adjacent conservation corridors. Attacks by packs of dogs on the buck have dramatically escalated in the past three weeks alone, decimating the population. Last week an adult pregnant Duiker was unable to outrun the dogs, and was mauled to death during the chase. In another instance a young Duiker mother was able to escape the dog pack only to leave her young Duiker offspring to the mercy of the pursuing dogs,” said Shaun Lyle, Chairman Hillcrest Park Neighbourhood Watch.

With Hillcrest and other neighbouring areas under pressure to accommodate an ever increasing population, every effort needs to be made to secure and preserve the remaining green areas. Hillcrest and Gillitts are unique for their conservation areas weaving in amongst residences and business but sadly many residents are not even aware of the jewel right at the heart of Hillcrest.

“The very fragile remaining bio diverse areas in Springside Nature Reserve and its adjacent environs is home to a limited number of fauna which have always traditionally existed here. As residents, we are very fortunate to have these creatures on our door step and to be able to appreciate living so close to nature in what has fast turned from a country village into a bustling town. Preserving of our fauna such as the Duiker is the responsibility of every resident and is part of looking after our wider environment whilst we still can. This is non negotiable,” said George Victor, Chairman of Springside Conservancy.

The authorities are investigating information being received by the community. Unattended dogs violate multiple bylaws and have a devastating consequence on the wildlife. Owners and their dogs face severe consequences if they are caught in the reserve.

“We need every assistance in being able to prevent future incidents. The Conservancy notes with appreciation the offers of assistance and support from caring residents, HPNW and KHBA. Lets stand together and decisively stop the slaughter,” said Victor.
