Take a stab at fencing

KZN Fencing will host a fencing competitioin at Hillcrest High School this September.

THE KZN Amateur Fencing Association will host its first competition of the season on Saturday 14 September at Hillcrest High School from 11.30am.

This is an individual ranking event in foil, épée and sabre with three age categories (cadet, junior and senior) for both men and women.

According to Hillcrest Fencing Club chairman, Stuart Gibson, this competition is the start of a series of events for the province, with

KZN Fencing hoping to host competitions every six weeks. There are two active clubs in Durban – in Hillcrest and at the University of KwaZulu-Natal – and the competition will provide the opportunity for individuals to compete against each other.

The local fencing scene has been given a significant boost since the arrival of internationally acclaimed fencing coach, Aydar Zabbarov. Coaching at both clubs, Zabbarov has more than 30 years of experience fencing at an international level and is a former Russian champion. He was also awarded the prestigious title Master of Sport of the USSR.

“KZN Fencing is currently on a drive to revive the sport in the province and introduce a whole new generation to fencing. We have a wide variety of students across all age groups, and it’s exciting to see the enthusiasm for the sport amongst our newcomers. It’s going to be interesting to see how they compete at a national level,” said Gibson.

He encouraged all fencers in the Highway area to go along to the competition on Saturday 14 September as it will provide invaluable experience and a real taste of what the sport is all about.

The event is open to all fencers in the Highway area and the entry fee is R50. Spectators are welcome.
