Shakespeare comedy gets the rock treatment

Have you booked your tickets yet?

WESTVILLE Boys’ High School presents William Shakespeare’s most beloved comedy, A Midsummer Night’s Dream for one week only.

A hilarious disaster ensues when a pair of young lovers flees the tyranny of the Duke of Athens in pursuit of love and are bewitched in the nearby magical woods. Add a misapplied love potion, mistaken identities, a lovers’ quarrel among the king and queen of the fairy world, and a troupe of insanely comic rustics in a play-within-a-play and you have the recipe for one of Shakespeare’s most fascinating and erudite treatises on love.

Directed and designed by Luke Holder, with choreography by Devin Möller and musical direction by Matric pupil Seth Parkin, A Midsummer Night’s Dream, although remaining true to the original text, has been reinterpreted and adapted for current South African audiences.

Featuring music by Metallica, Seether and Pink, and epic Bollywood dance sequences, stick fighting and outrageous costumes, this show promises to be a worthy addition to the school’s already exceptional performing arts tradition.

The show runs from 12 to 19 September in the Roy Couzens Theatre at Westville Boys High School. Tickets are R30 for adults and R20 for pupils. To book tickets, contact 031 267 1330.
