Baby shower for vulnerable mothers and babies

Businesses are invited to join a good cause to benefit babies and mothers on Nelson Mandela Day.

THE Upper Highway Baby Home (UHBH) will be hosting a baby shower that is set to benefit 1 020 mothers. Hosted on Nelson Mandela Day, July 18, from 09:00 to 11:00, the baby shower is to show support for the Upper Highway Baby Home Saving Futures Programme and other vulnerable babies throughout Durban.

Kerry Stanton of the Upper Highway said the programme serves young moms and their babies under three years old.

“The programme came about because statistically, abandoned babies in South Africa are mostly born to teenage moms who feel they have no option but to abandon their babies. The UHBH started working with these young moms to establish a support network that is aimed at assisting the moms, who are more often than not victims of gender-based violence, incest and rape, to care for their young babies and finish school at the same time,” she said.

Stanton said the programme has addressed growth stunting in the sector by ensuring that vulnerable babies receive at least one meal a day that will fully provide for the nutritional needs of that child. The moms receive food, emotional and spiritual guidance, and food, clothes, nappies, etc, for their babies, as well as parenting support.

To continue the massively successful programme, the baby home is calling on the public to join the cause on this Nelson Mandela Day.
“As of May 31, we have commitments for close to 20 of the 60 tonnes of product needed for the programme, and R500 000 has been secured in financial commitments towards the programme. We only need 500 businesses to each donate R1 000 for Mandela Day, and we will be good to go for the year.”

“Section 18A certificates are available, making all donations fully tax-deductible. It is not too late to get your business on board and join us for amazing Mandela Day festivities at the UHBH from 9 to 11 am,” she said.

Once the donation has been made, please contact Kerry at 082 823 1844 and advise if you would like to attend the Mandela Day function – and provide details for your Section 18A certificate.
