Hillary open trenches pose safety risks

A concerned resident pleaded with the municipality to solve the issue of the ageing infrastructure.

AN issue of a water leak, which started over a year ago, has led to a part of Angle Road in Hillary to be inaccessible.

A resident, Dennis Singh, who has been residing in the area for more than 30 years, said the matter should have been fixed and never allowed to reach such a despicable state.

According to Singh, there have been many workers contracted to work on the intersection of Angle Road and Oldfield Place in the last year.

Singh said it all started as a water leak, and after a year, when it was finally resolved, there was another leak two months later.

“When they came to fix the leak, they left massive trenches which have not been backfilled or tarred. The road has been like this for almost three weeks, and as residents, we have no access to a certain part of the road; it is inaccessible; it is causing such inconvenience,” he said.

Singh added that it is so frustrating that something so simple could cause such chaos.

“This is not rocket science. The City should be looking at solving the infrastructure, which is ageing. They should sort out the problem and not the ‘symptoms’ of the problem.”

An example is the puddles all over their precinct which are caused by the water leaks.

“To me, it seems like our municipality does not care about the people as there are many simple issues which do not get resolved. We are definitely not getting a fair deal as ratepayers – a problem that should take two or three days to resolve takes months,” he said.

Ward 63 councillor Samantha Windvogel said when she enquired with the municipality, she was told there is shortage of backfill.

“It is rather shocking that the eThekwini Municipality, to date, still has not covered the holes.”

Further to this, the councillor said she was told that the City is awaiting new budget allocations to be released.

The Queensburgh News did not receive any comment from eThekwini Municipality by the time of going to print.
