The Browns’ School hosts chess tournament

58 players from both the high school and primary school sections participated in the The KZN LSEN Chess Championships 2023 after a three-year break.

THE Browns’ School was excited to host The KZN LSEN Chess Championships 2023 on Wednesday, May 17, after a three-year break. The Khulangolwazi School, The Kenmont School and Mason Lincoln schools responded to the invite.

The school was overwhelmed by the response and interest in chess as 58 players from both the high school and primary school sections participated in the tournament.

The children were excited to participate in the tournament, and chess arbiter Keith Rust was impressed by the learners’ chess skills.

The top three players in the primary school section were Alwande Magwaza from The Browns’ School; Connor Rudman from Kenmont School, and Hunter Govender from The Browns’ School came third.

In the high school section, Thulebona Mthombeni from Maison Lincoln took the first spot, Siyabonga Ndlovu, also from Maison, came second, and the third spot was taken by Kerwin Naidoo from Kenmont School.

Kanthi Sarjoo, speech therapist, FIDE (The International Chess Federation), and the development instructor at The Browns’ School, said the school is grateful to Pick ‘n Pay for their generous sponsorship.

“The participants were all treated to goodie bags also provided by Pick ‘n Pay,” she said.
