Westville school invites the public for a bone-marrow donor drive

The drive is hosted in memory of one of Westville’s Senior learner's Syamthanda Nxasana who passed away from leukaemia at the age of 10 last year.

WESTVILLE Senior Primary is hosting a bone-marrow donor drive on Saturday, May 13 in conjunction with South African Bone Marrow Registry (SABMR) in memory of one of their learners, Syamthanda Nxasana.

Siyamthanda passed away last year from leukaemia at the age of 10. Syamthanda was a dearly loved learner of Westville Senior, and last year, when she was diagnosed, the school tried to do as much as they could to help her and her family.

A donor drive was organised last year in June, in the hope of trying to find a match for her. The Westville community showed their support for Syamthanda by coming out in droves and signing up to be donors.

Unfortunately, a match was not found for Syamthanda, and she lost her fight to cancer late last year.

“We wanted to honour her memory and do another drive to try and help others who are suffering. We urge the community to come out again and support this cause,” said the school.

The drive will be held at Westville Senior Primary School above Wandsbeck Field. It is a simple process, and all you have to do is fill in a form and take a cheek swab if you are between the ages of 18 and 45 years.
