It’s a doggy-dog world for Anita

This will be the ninth annual Dog Box Challenge, and brave participants will be ‘locked up’ in the kennels at the SPCA for 24 hours.

AN animal lover, who wants nothing more for animals than for them to get the love and care they deserve, is devoting 24 hours of her time to being confined in a dog box, all in the name of raising funds for the Kloof and Highway SPCA.

Anita van Aswegen said she would like individuals from the Highway area and surrounds to support her by sponsoring cash or attending the family Kloof and Highway SPCA Dog Box Challenge on May 26 at the animal shelter. The event starts at midday on May 26 and ends at midday on May 27.

“I have always been an animal lover for as long as I can remember. Growing up, I was taught to love all forms of life. I have always been involved in animal rescue from the time I was 18 years old,” she said.

She said it is her fourth year doing the challenge for the animal welfare organisation.

“A friend of mine asked me to join her, and after the first time, I was hooked. Now it is something I look forward to each year,” said Van Aswegen.

From midday on May 26, Van Aswegen and other participants will be locked in kennels where they will stay overnight. They get fed in the box and are allowed toilet breaks and a few minutes now and then to stretch their legs.

A family event with entertainment also takes place while all of this is happening.

“Donors can either donate money through the SPCA’s website, hand over cash to me or bring money to the event to put into the tins,” she added.

“I must stress that the SPCA doesn’t only take care of dogs and cats – there are tortoises, geese, chickens, goats and donkeys, too. My goal is to raise R10K or more for these beautiful creatures,” said Van Aswegen.

She added that raising funds was the main purpose of the event, but she also enjoys all the people she meets and the stories they have to share. Some people do it in honour of their loved ones. It’s really a special event,” said Van Aswegen.

To sponsor her cause, call Van Aswegen on 082 520 8161 or donate via EFT.
