Dig in and clean your surroundings

A total of 180 bags of litter was collected during a clean-up in Hillcrest.

‘WE Dig Hillcrest’ initiative was well supported as more than 250 people came out to clean up Old Main Road.

Corporates, NGOs, schools and Hillcrest residents came out with their plastic bags, gloves, spades and brooms to help make a difference and beautify their area.

Cindy Norcott, Robin Hood Foundation founder, said the idea was sparked after she was invited by a friend to a clean-up on Inanda Road a few weeks ago.

“There is a growing frustration about the state of our roads, and as citizens, we cannot sit and wait for the municipality; we should also take responsibility. We just looked at the bigger picture, and it is fun when we all get together and get our hands dirty.

“There is a saying: ‘Service is the rent we pay for living on this earth’,” said Norcott.

“In the bags, there were rocks and soil and all kinds of litter. This will make a significant difference as that soil would have ended up in our stormwater drains and the plastics in the oceans, endangering other species.”

She added that she wishes everyone could take back their power and clean their surroundings instead of complaining all the time.
