Aweh! Find out what’s popping in Durban this weekend

Make your way to Durban for an exciting weekend – don’t miss out.

There is plenty to do in Durban and surrounds this weekend leading up to November, so take advantage of the special experiences on offer.

Saturday, October 29

What do the names Standing Parker 1Earth Mother and Consider Us all have in common? They are all artworks that reside in the Durban Botanic Gardens.

To know about these and other artistic creations that form part of the landscape of gardens, join the Gardens Walk this Saturday from 9.30 to 11.00. The outing, led by a volunteer environmental education guide at the gardens, Christine Sole, starts and ends at the Visitors’ Complex.

Entrance fee is R60 per person, and R40 for pensioners and students.  Children under 12 years are given free entry.

November 4 to 9

Empatheatre in association with The National Arts Festival presents a one-woman play,  Isidlamlilo – The Fire Eater, at the University of KwaZulu-Natal’s Sneddon Theatre.

The play tells the life story of Zenzile Maseko (60), who rented a cramped room in the Thokoza Women Hostel in Durban, and who was haunted by her past working as an IFP assassin (fire-eater) in the build-up to the 1994 elections.

Isidlamlio showings are at 19:00 on November 4, 5 and 8, at 14:30 on November 6, and 11:00 on November 9. Tickets cost R130, and there is an age restriction of 13+. Bookings are through Computicket or call 0861 915 800. For school and community theatre bookings, contact Margie at 083 251 9412.

November 17 to 19

A vibrant new musical for Disability Month, Thetha Mosadi, Speak out, Woman, opens at The Playhouse on November 17 at 19:00.

This powerful fusion of song, dance and dialogue salutes KwaZulu-Natal youth and women with disabilities, who have been trained and mentored by African Sinakho Arts and women in general.

On November 18, at 14:00, there will be a schools’ performance, and the final show on November 19 starts at 19:00.

For bookings, go to Webtickets or Pick ’n Pay. Tickets cost R120, with a concession of R60 for group bookings of 10+ people, children and pensioners.
