Joint effort to keep Westville beautiful

Inmates from the Westville Prison were happy to join the eThekwini Municipality and the Westville community to clean-up at the Westville Civic Centre.

THE community of Westville, along with the eThekwini Municipality and correctional services, gathered together for the clean-up of the Westville Civic Centre on Friday, October 14. The day saw the joint effort of workers from these groups cutting bushes, sweeping the grounds of the centre and cleaning verges.

The city’s spokesperson, Mswakhe Mayisela, said the clean-up is part of their internal campaign that started a few months ago. “The different departments within the municipality challenge themselves to complete a task, and this is the challenge the department in Westville has taken upon themselves. These challenges show the City’s commitment to keeping areas clean,” he said.

Speaking to the Highway Mail, Keep Westville Beautiful, which was also part of the clean-up, said they were approached by the municipality to join forces for this clean-up. “Our aim is to keep this area beautiful, so it was a positive sign to have been approached by the municipality. This shows that our work is being recognised, and more people will be encouraged to jump on the wagon to keep our area beautiful,” said Mark Cransta of Keep Westville Beautiful.

The department of correctional services brought a few inmates who had shovels in their hands and other garden equipment. “We are part of the outside-custody team. Our department maintains the grounds of Westville prison. We also do community work, and whenever the community needs us, they liaise with our department. We were called here today to this clean-up, and we are happily in attendance,” said Leynhardt van Rooyen of the Department.
The municipality extended their gratitude to their workers, inmates and the community of Westville who came to the clean-up.
