Helping schools to stay eco-friendly

The Westville Ratepayers Association joined in an operation to help keep schools eco-friendly.

The Westville Ratepayers’ Association (WRA) donated 10 indigenous trees and books in an outreach programme that aims to assist schools in becoming eco-friendly.

The programme joined together two primary schools, Pitlochry and Vezamafa, for the day.

Pitlochry School in Westville recently hosted Vezamafa Primary School from Kwadabeka. “Fifteen learners from Vezamafa Primary School were invited to attend the programme. The programme involved celebrating Arbour Day and a Career Simulation Day. Learners from both schools participated in designing posters and wrote poems on the theme of Spring/Arbour Day,” said Pat Reddy of the WRA.

Book prizes were also awarded for the best poster and best poem in each grade.

The day ended with learners from both schools undertaking the planting of the indigenous trees. Learners from Vezamafa went on a school tour and learnt gardening techniques. Various professionals attended the career day to educate learners on careers. This provided learners with insight for when they choose subjects in high school.

Vic Naidoo of the WRA said the initiative is part of them establishing themselves within the community. The association recently held a public meeting with the residents, where they aired their issues and officials were present to account. Another meeting with the councillor is set to be held in the near future.
