Beagle rescue group to hold fundraising walk at bike park

An organisation that helps rehome beagle dogs is hosting their inaugural fundraiser event at Giba Gorge on Sunday.

THE BRAG beagle family is hosting their first fundraiser at Giba Gorge on September 4.

The Beagle Rehoming and Assessments with Grace (BRAG) Spring Social will include a walk from the restaurant to the waterfall, prizes, and the opportunity for multiple, social-media-worthy photos. All humans, beagles and socialised dogs of any breed are welcome.

Funds raised will support the work of BRAG. Although BRAG is a Cape Town-based organisation, three fundraising events will be held simultaneously this weekend in Cape Town, Johannesburg and Durban. Three dedicated volunteers are working tirelessly to help homeless dogs of this breed across the city. The trio includes Karen Carlton-Shields who has six beagles and Natasha Williams and Linda Shelah who have three beagles each.

Volunteer Shelah says, “It’s beagle rescue, although we do take in other dogs when needs be. We rehome these beautiful dogs, look after them and foster them while we look for permanent homes. Fostering a dog isn’t cheap. The funds raised will assist with covering vet bills and other costs.”

Shelah is the proud owner of three beagles, two of which are rescue dogs. Roly, the latest arrival was surrendered by his family when they emigrated.

She says, “Cassie is our original dog, and we got her from a breeder in Pretoria. Jessie is a rescue, and now we have Roly, too. We’ve only had him for seven weeks, and we are teaching him to not jump up. Beagles were bred as hunting dogs. They are independent thinkers and can be stubborn. That’s the breed – they sometimes do their own thing. Roly is a bit of an escape artist, and when the gate opens, he will go and explore the outside world. They are scent hounds so he’s just following his nose because it’s so interesting.”

Join Shelah, Carlton-Shields, Williams and their beagle friends this weekend at Giba Gorge for a walk and a wag.
