Concern over the rise of fraud cases

The Hillcrest SAPS have warned the public to be aware of the risks of giving out their information over the phone as fraud cases are on the rise.

HILLCREST SAPS have alerted the community about the increase in fraud-related crime within the Upper Highway area.

In the current months, Hillcrest SAPS reported that they have noted, with great concern, the rising increase of fraud-related cases, especially amongst the elderly. This includes phone scams, whereby the victim receives a phone call from someone claiming to be from their banking institution and asking for one-time PINs and personal information.

“Please do not give anyone a one-time PIN, SMS PIN or any personal information over the phone.  If you are unsure whether it is the bank, rather go to your nearest bank and transact through them. These readily available sellers are often criminals masquerading as honest traders, abusing these various platforms,” they said.

The community is urged to refrain from buying anything online that they have not seen in person and to make sure they have all the necessary information about the seller.
