WATCH: Official launch of construction of Westown in Shongweni

The construction of the Westown development has officially begun.

THE community of Shongweni has gladly welcomed the construction of the Westown development in Shongweni. The R15b investment is set to include the retail high street offering of Westown Square, a new hospital, residential apartments, and commercial, business and logistics sub-precincts.

The construction was launched during an event – on what will be the construction site for the next few years. The launch hosted the developers that will be part of the development, the mayor of eThekwini Municipality Mxolisi Kaunda, community leaders, as well as the community members at large.

According to the eThekwini Municipality, the Shongweni Urban Development includes an urban mixed-use development that is intended to create a new economic hub in eThekwini’s Outer West area, catalyse further investment in the area, stimulate job creation and bring an array of much-needed services closer to communities.

Speaking during the launch, Kaunda said the development is meant to uplift the community as they start with the first of eight phases.

“We are aware that this project is located between Ward 7 and 103, and we will ensure that the people of these two wards are prioritised in terms of empowerment opportunities. Since this is a city-wide project and because of its magnitude, other services will be sourced from neighbouring wards in the municipality,” he said.

The project is set to be completed in September 2024.
