Forest Hills athletics event has over 1 000 entrants

An Upper Highway running and walking event is back with a bang after a two-year break due to the pandemic.

FOREST Hills Athletic Club hosted their first 10km race in two years, on Sunday, July 31.

The previous ‘Forest 10’ was held in 2019, due to the Covid pandemic. Over 1 000 runners and walkers registered for this morning’s event, according to Forest Hills Athletic Club chairperson, Jo Wild.

Wild said the ‘Forest 10’ race is one of the few events which is a dedicated 10km event.

She said, “It’s a nice fast, flat race so it’s a good training run.”

The winner of the Men’s Open race was 28-year-old Fikinkosi Zondi from Hillcrest Villagers Athletic Club (KZNA), in a blistering time of 00:32:50. He was hoping for a 30-minute finish but was happy with his win.

Zondi said, “I’m thrilled with taking first position. The race was very nice on the flat with no hills, which is one of the reasons I enjoyed it.”

Zondi took up the sport in 2019 and focuses on short distances only so the athlete is not running the Comrades Marathon this year. He is a short-distance specialist.

The winner of the Women’s Open race was Michelle Cooke, running for Murray and Roberts (KZNA), who finished in a time of 00:41:15.

The athletics club is based at Forest Hills Sports Club in the Upper Highway suburb of the same name, near Kloof. The club started as a BMX cycle track for the residents in the area, and the club was officially opened in the early 1990s.

Over 1 000 entrants wait for the start of the Forest 10 race.
