WATCH: Flood victims housed at KwaDabeka community hall concerned about living conditions

The Democratic Alliance visits flood victims housed in KwaDabeka community hall to find out how they are doing.

FLOOD victims feel forgotten three months after the floods, as some have been living in community halls following the loss of their houses.

Victims expressed their grievances during the Democratic Alliance’s (DA) two-day visit. The DA made their last stop at the KwaDabeka community hall which is currently housing over 100 women, men and children.

Present during the visit was KwaZulu-Natal DA leader, Francois Rodgers, together with DA KZN spokesperson on Social Development, Mmabatho Tembe, DA KZN spokesperson on Human Settlements, Marlaine Nair.

The flood victims made it clear that they have been housed in the halls with no definitive answer as to when they will be able to move out.

Speaking to the Highway Mail, Musa Dube, who lives in the KwaDabeka hall, said the situation is hideous, and it makes them anxious not knowing when they will be out.

“When we got here, we were promised that we would be out in three weeks. It’s three months now, and we are still here. There is no privacy, and it is not an environment where our kids can learn and grow. We can’t even go back to where we lived and try to build because there is nothing,” he said.

Rodgers said the past two days of their visit have been shocking. “I will be writing to the Premier, to the Provincial Treasurer, and to the MEC of Human Settlements and ask them about their submission and when the submission was made, so we can determine why this has taken this long,” he said.
