Keep Westville Beautiful enters Verge Competition

Keep Westville Beautiful will be entering The Verge Competition for the first time, with their flagship garden.

KEEP Westville Beautiful (KWB) is pleased to be parading one of their gardens at the 2022 Verge competition. The Verge Competition is hosted by the Parks, Recreation and Culture Unit in the eThekwini Municipality.
According to the municipality’s spokesperson, Msawakhe Mayisela, the competition aims to promote a sustainable environment by encouraging residents to beautify and keep their verges well-maintained.

Liesel Muhl from KWB said they will be participating for the first time in The Verge Competition.
“Keep Westville Beautiful has entered our flagship garden at the corner of Jan Hofmeyr and Rodger Sishi Road. This garden was overgrown and needed lots of work, so a few months ago, a few volunteers got stuck in and worked for a few weeks to clear out all the rubbish from the homeless people and the dead bushes and plants and weeds, and then came the fun bit – planting. We planted just as winter started, so it was a gamble, but alas, the plants have really taken beautifully,” she said.

Muhl said their first prize in the competition would be for the community to see how much effort is being put into beautifying their suburb. “This garden is maintained by Helen Canon and her staff, and our Keep Westville Beautiful staff help, as well. Many hours each week are put into keeping this garden weeded,” she said.

eThekwini Municipality encouraged all residents to take part in the competition.

“The competition is open to all residents. The public is encouraged to either nominate themselves or homes, businesses, schools, individuals, garden clubs, conservancies or industrial companies that have the best verges in front of their properties,” they stated.
Forms can also be obtained from Sizakala centres or libraries, or they can be requested via email. Completed forms must contain details of the nominator and be submitted with pictures of the verge. They can be returned to Sizakala centres or libraries.
Alternatively, completed forms and pictures can be e-mailed to Nonhlanhla Gumede at nonhlanhla.gumede@durban.gov.za and Thami Mbhele at thami.mbhele@durban.gov.za. Submissions without pictures will not be considered.
