Sewage leak causes a stink

The devastating floods wreaked havoc in KwaZulu-Natal, and caused a sewerage pipe to burst in Sunny Brae Park off Fyfe Road, Westville.

THE water has been flowing across residents’ properties for weeks, causing widespread concern.

“After waking up to our front yard being destroyed as a result of the flood, we picked up a foul stench coming from the river which was gushing through our property,” said Westville residents Rod and Shirley McDonald.

The 72-year-old couple said they have been living with the awful sewage smell for more than a month, and they fear for their health as well as their two dogs’ health. “This river is a health hazard to both pets and humans and could potentially land us with hefty vet and hospital bills.”

According to the McDonalds, the municipality attempted to drain the sewerage pipes using rods and jets but had no luck. “Since the municipality’s three failed attempts to drain the sewerage pipes, they have not come back to attend to the problem, nor have they communicated what actions will be taken to clean up this mess.”

“We had sewage leaks in the past, and it is unacceptable that these leaks continue to occur,” said a concerned Rod.

His wife Shirley said, “Sunny Brae Park has become the mouth of the sewage stream which is within 100 metres of the children’s playground and the gym equipment in the park. The park has always been a family-friendly environment and was often utilised as a place to walk dogs, exercise or to unwind and relax. It is truly upsetting to see what was once a beautiful park deteriorate into a sewage-infested swamp.”

“The leak has only become worse as time has passed, as the sewage continues to spill into the stream that feeds the Palmiet River, which then flows into our ocean. If left unattended, the issue will have a detrimental impact on our land and aquatic ecosystems,” Rod added.

The McDonalds said that they have not yet received additional communication from the municipality, regarding the sewage leak, on when repairs will be underway.

The couple said they are pleading for the leak to be fixed before the situation worsens.

The municipality was not available for comment at the time of going to print.
